October 06, 1881 ~ Thursday

April [October] 6, 1881 We met in general conference The Twelve
A crown Keys crossed Apostles met the met the Body of Orson Pratt at the
west gate & carried it in from of[f] the stand in the
Big Tabernacle. The Conference commenced at 10 oclok F D Richards prayed
President Taylor spoke a few munits. W Woodruff made a few
remarks and the Meeting dismissed atuntill 1 oclok
The corps was then placed in position to be seen by the public
for two hours untill 1 oclok which was seen by many
thousands at 1 oclok the Meeting opened by Prayer by J F
Smith
, after which W. Woodruff arose & read the Revelation
given through Joseph Smith to Orson Pratt Nov 4, 1830 Sec 34, D & C
W Woodruff then said if I were to utter my
thoughts aloud I would say 'O God the Eternal Father we ask thee in the name
of thy Son Jesus Christ, to give unto us grace, to give unto us power, to give
unto us faith, to give unto us inspiration, as the servants of the Lord that what

on this side of the veil. They are however recorded on the
other side of the veil, he will meet his history there. I have
been associated with Br Pratt, a good many years. The first
sermon I Ever herd him preach was in Aprail 1834, in a house
in Kirtland. it was there I listened to the first Testimony I ever
heard from him also from Brigham Young, Oliver Cowdry
Hyram Smith & Joseph Smith the Prophet and one or two
others. I was associated with him then for this was Just before
we started in Zions Camp for Missouri. Their are a few members
of Zions Camp here to day. Their is a small remnant of them left
All those brethren who were in the camp, our travelling a thousand
miles led by a Prophet of God will remember the scenes we
were called upon to pass through we were visited by the Cholera
The first circumstance of the kind that we as a company ever
experience. Br Orson Pratt whose body lies before us lay at the
point of Death as also George A Smith and a number of others
while some twenty of the Brethren were laid in the grave. The
Lord took whom he would take, and preserved those whom He
would preserve according to the council of his own will No man
could pass through a much worse sickness than the Cholera, men
weighing near towo hundred pounds were reduced to seventy
or one hundred pounds in a vary short time. Br Pratt as I
have said lay at the point of death, yet during his sickness he
manifested that indomitable determination that has governed
his whole life from that day to this. while death as it were sought
to overcome him, he rolled over upon his back closed his Eyes
clasped his teeth and shut his hands and apparently said
now death do your worst I defy you for in the name of Israels

God I am going to live. In the name of Jesus Christ I
am going to stand in the flesh and bear my testimony
of the Gospel of Christ to the Nations of the Earth That was
about the way he acted from that moment he began to recover
and He has lived with us since that day forty seven years
His history is before you, it is before the world as far as written
as far as we can obtain it. Bro Orson Pratt has lived in
this Church longer than any other man who has been in it
Perhaps He has lived longer in it than vary few men ever
will live in the Church and Kingdom of God in the flesh
He has crossed the Atlantic Ocean sixteen times And has
travelled more miles than any other man in the Church. He
has preached more sermons. He had brought many thousands
into the Church. He had this revelation given to him which
I have read in your hearing he has lifted up his voice long &
loud. He has declaired the words of life and salvation to this
Generation, his garments are clean from the blood of the
inhabitants of the Earth and his testimony will rise against
this generation to condemn them. I believe there is no man
living, I do not say it is so but give it as my belief that there
is no man living to day in the whole gentile world that has
accumulated By hard study and labor without the assistance of
teachers the same amount of mathematical, Philosphical and Astrionom-
ical Knowledge that Br Orson Pratt obtained. He has probably published
and written more upon science, astronomy, mathematics and upon
the gospel of Christ than any other man in our Church if not in the
United States. He has done a great work, He has done a good work

Discourse 1881-10-06
FIFTY-FIRST SEMI-ANNUAL CONFERENCE. PRESIDENT WILFORD WOODRUFF Read a revelation through the Pro- phet Joseph Smith to Orson Pratt, given November 4th, 1830, as fol- lows: "1. My son Orson, hearken and hear and behold what I, the Lord God, shall say unto you, even Jesus Christ your Redeemer; 2. The light and the life of the world; a light which shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not; 3. Who so loved the world that he gave his own life, that as many as would believe might become the sons of God: wherefore you are my son, 4. And blessed are you because you have believed; 6. [5.] And more blessed are you because you are called of me to preach my gospel, 6. To lift up your voice as with the sound of a trump, both long and loud, and cry re- pentance unto a crooked and perverse gene- ration, preparing the way of the Lord for his second coming; 7. For behold, verily, verily I say unto you, the time is soon at hand, that I shall come in a cloud with power and great glory, 8. And it shall be a great day at the time of my coming, for all nations shall tremble. 9. But before that great day shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turn- ed into blood, and the stars shall refuse their shining, and some shall fall, and great de- struction await the wicked: 10. Wherefore lift up your voice and spare not, for the Lord God hath spoken; therefore prophesy, and it shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost; 11. And if you are faithful, behold, I am with you until I come: 12. And verily, verily, I say unto you, I come quickly. I am your Lord and your Re- deemer. Even so. Amen." [Doctrine and Covenants 34:1-12] Brother Woodruff said if he was to express his desires to the Lord it would be, O Lord, give us grace that we may be able to accomplish the work required of us. But O, the chains that bind this immortal spirit! Sometimes he felt, O that he could break the bands of mortal- ity and open his eyes in the spirit world to receive that which Orson Pratt is now enjoying. But we must be patient and be willing to abide our time. It would be impos- sible to give the history of that great man or to depict the glory that awaits him. It would take the trump of the sixth angel to do that. He had been associated with Brother Pratt many years; the first testimony he ever heard from him was in a house in Kirtland, in April, 1834. He went with him to Mis- souri, in Zion's Camp. In traveling a thousand miles with the Prophet, those who were in that company re- ceived an experience that they can never forget. Men were reduced to mere skeletons with the cholera, and many died. Bro. Pratt, while suf- fering from its effects, manifested that indomitable will which has since been many times ex- hibited. He struggled with death and overcame by faith in God Brother Pratt had lived longer in this Church, traveled more miles and preached more sermons than any man in it. He had baptized thousands, and fulfilled the revela- tion just read. His garments were clear from the blood of this genera- tion. He had studied and written more upon the gospel and upon sci- ence than any man in the Church. He had now gone home. It was all right. This event the speaker had expected for some months. Before he left on his late visit to St. George he laid his hands upon Bro. Pratt and blessed him. This was record- ed in his journal which the histori- ans could read after the speaker's death. If Bro. Pratt could speak to this assembly, after meeting with the Prophet Joseph and his breth- ren in the spirit world, he would say to the Apostles, the Seventies, the High Priests, the Elders, the Lesser Priesthood, and the Saints, can you afford to spend one hour in neglect of this great work, upon the things of this world?" The spirit of Bro. Pratt is alive to-day and will live as long as our heavenly Father lives. His testimony is closed, his voice is hushed in death, but it will not be a great while for some of us before we hear it in the spirit world. Let the living work while the day lasts. Bro. Pratt makes the ninth Apostle that had left us who came through Emigration CaƱon in 1847. This enjoined us to be also ready; to be faithful to God and the responsibility resting upon us. The speaker thanked God for the Gospel and Priesthood revealed and exhorted all to be faithful as saviors on Mount Zion, "Sleep on Brother Orson, then with thy quo- rum thou shalt meet in the bliss and spend eternal day. Amen."
