Letter to John Daniel Thompson McAllister, 20 June 1888
Salt Lake City, Utah, . President J. D. T. McAllister, St. George. Dear Brother: It was with much regret that I heard of your folks being subpoenaed as witnesses; but it is gratifying to know that you escaped the clutches of your enemies. Your escape was a narrow one. You have done well in electing new High Councilors in place of those who are absent, also a Stake Superintendent of Sunday Schools, etc. Our or- ganizations should be maintained as far as practicable. It is not generally the de- sign, however, to fill the places of brethren who are compelled to take the "under- ground," but to have their counselors or someone else act temporarily during their absence. By letter from Brother Wells I was informed that he in- tended to have Brother Bleak return to his home. We do not understand why the Deseret News should take the action which you mention concerning their subscribers in the South. We will have the matter brought to the attention of the Manager of the News Co. and see what his reasons are for doing so. With love and praying the Lord to bless you, I am, Your Brother, Wilford Woodruff
