Letter to Silas S. Smith, 25 September 1891
P.O. Box B. Salt Lake City, Utah President Silas S. Smith, Manassa. Dear Brother: Mr. Cabers has written to Zion's Saving Bank and Trust Co. making, a prop osition concerning your notes. The business was brought before us yesterday, and the Bank appears to think, as does Mr. Capers, perhaps, that the First presidency is in some way responsible for the money that is due. This probably arises from the fact that, in order to help you and Brother Hammond, and to save you and the people from discredit, we have met the interest and the chattel mortgage on the cattle of Brother Hammond. We would like to know from you what the condition of this business is? We have no security for the money already paid exceptig your note of $4000, which is still unpaid, but we have no security for the $1610 and other amounts of interest we have paid. This application of Mr. Capers presenting itself in the way it does arous inquiry on our part, and hence we write this letter to you. Are you preparing your- selves to meet these obligations? And what shall the Bank say to Mr. Capers in reply to his proposition? By giving us information upon these points we shall be able to act in- telligently in this business, and will, probably lead to more satisfactory results so far as Mr. Capers is concerned. Hoping to hear from you soon, and with kind regards to yourself and th elders and saints, we remain your brethren, Wilford Woodruff Geo. Q. Cannon Jos. F. Smith P. S.: You should understand we have to borrow the money to meet the amounts mention and that we have been and are still paying interest on them.
