Letter from James B. Staker, 31 October 1891

Prest W. Woodruff Salt Lake City Dear Brother: Your communication bearing date of Sept 22nd is to hand. In answer to the same will say: I regret very much that your call comes a second time and finds me unprepared to go. I have been somewhat unfortunate during the last year and my affairs are now in no better shape, but a little worse than what they were one year ago. Being in considerable debt and in every way unprepared to break of and leave I hope you will have me excused yet for a little time. I do not desire

Circular to the Officers and Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 31 October 1891

Salt Lake City, . TO THE OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS: Dear Brethren and Sisters.—Permit us to draw your attention to the accompanying Circular of The Deseret News Company. Its suggestions and requests meet with our unqualified approval. It would afford us much pleasure to learn of its increasing circulation, and that it finds a place in the home of every Latter-day Saint. The Desert News is the journal through which the Authorities of the Church, when they have aught to say to the Saints in this way, communicate their views and wishes; and, occupying this position, it should be read by all the officers and members of the Church who desire to keep themselves advised, as all should, of the instructions and counsels of the First Presidency and their asso- ciates. With kindest regards, we remain, Your Brethren, Wilford Woodruff Geo. Q. Cannon Jos. F. Smith

Letter to David Moore, 31 October 1891

Salt Lake City, . Bishop David Moore Mound Fort. Dear Brother: You will doubtless remember that at the General Priesthood meeting held in the Eighteenth Ward Chapel, on Wednesday, the 7th inst., the question of raising the necessary funds to complete the Salt Lake Temple was considered, and the early completion of that building became the subject of inter- esting remarks by several of those present. It having been ascertained that it would require not less than One Hundred Thousand Dollars to finish the edifice, it was suggested that a certain number of brethren should each give a stated sum sufficient to meet this amount. The sense of the meeting, however, expressed by unanimous vote, was that the subscription should be general, leaving each person at liberty to give as large a sum as he pleased, and those of moderate means such an amount as they could afford. In calling your attention to this action of the Priesthood meeting, we desire to suggest that the present is an opportune time to carry this proposition into practical effect; and we trust that you will reflect the spirit and feeling of the meeting in presenting this matter to the members of your Ward, as it is exceedingly desirable that the Saints should be enabled to fully appreciate the importance of making a last strong effort to finish this Temple, to whose dedication we so longingly look forward. We are, with kindest regards, Wilford Woodruff Geo. Q. Cannon Jos. F. Smith First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
